Imagine being alone in the middle of the ocean. No land in sight. Just endless waves, shifting skies, and the sound of the wind. For most, this is a challenge beyond comprehension. For Abhilash Tomy, it was a calling.

A former Indian Navy officer, the first Indian to complete a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe, and a man who quite literally refused to sink—Abhilash Tomy’s story isn’t just about sailing. It’s about resilience, self-belief, and the power of pushing through when everything seems lost.
A Journey Around the World—Alone
In 2012-13, Abhilash embarked on the journey that would etch his name in history. Sailing aboard the INSV Mhadei, he covered 23,100 nautical miles, crossing the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans—alone, without stopping, and without any modern assistance.
For 151 days, it was just him, the boat, and the vast unknown. The journey was more than just physical endurance; it was a mental and emotional challenge. Imagine being alone for months, navigating unpredictable waters, fixing everything on your own, and relying solely on your skill and intuition. That’s the kind of patience and perseverance most of us can only dream of.
The Storm That Almost Ended Everything
In 2018, during the Golden Globe Race—one of the toughest solo sailing races in the world—Abhilash faced a life-threatening crisis. A massive storm in the Indian Ocean wrecked his boat, leaving him severely injured and unable to move. Alone, stranded, and in excruciating pain, he sent out a distress signal. Rescue took three days. Three days of surviving in the middle of the ocean, unable to stand, waiting for help to arrive.
Most people would have stopped there. Most people would have taken this as a sign to walk away. But not Abhilash Tomy.
The Comeback: Sailing Again in 2022
Four years later, he was back. In 2022, he entered the Golden Globe Race again—this time, finishing what he had started. This wasn’t just about winning; it was about proving to himself that setbacks don’t define us. What we do after them does.
Lessons from the Ocean
Abhilash Tomy’s journey teaches us something far beyond sailing:
Endurance is everything – The ones who don’t give up are the ones who eventually find their way.
Control what you can, adapt to what you can’t – The sea is unpredictable, just like life. The only way forward is to adjust and keep going.
Solitude is a teacher – Being alone in the ocean forces you to understand yourself. Sometimes, the hardest journeys are the ones that show us who we truly are.
Your Own Voyage
Not all of us will sail around the world. But we all have our own oceans to cross, our own storms to face. The question is—when the waves get rough, do we give up? Or do we, like Abhilash Tomy, find a way to keep sailing?
